Using an outdoor socket? If you are placing the control box outdoors in an unsheltered area, we would recommend upgrading the charger to an IP67 rated unit. For an additional £36 (vat included) we will send you a charger that has a control box that can be submerged in unsalted water for up to 30 minutes, therefore providing enhanced protection during adverse weather conditions such as heavy rain or snow. The IP67 charger has the same specifications as our IP55 and IP65 rated chargers, but the IP67 charger also includes an additional temperature sensor inside the 3-pin plug. This will help prevent thermal damage in case your 3-pin socket overheats.

Next Working Day shipping for goods showing as In Stock. Order before 1pm. Excludes weekends and bank holidays. For goods displayed as Preorder, the expected shipping time will be displayed above.

Use A 16A Scuko Socket To Charge A Type 2 Socket Vehicle With Our Schuko To Type 2 Charger

The Type 2 to Schuko charger, also referred to as a Notladekabel, mobile charger, mobile charging cable, home charger, or brick charger, offers adjustable current settings, allowing regualr EV charging up to the recognised safe limit of 10A. When using a Schuko socket with a Type 2 mobile charger, an electrician should certify that the socket is suitable for charging an electric vehicle.

Using the lower current settings that this charger offers, enables compatibility with sockets requiring less than 10A. This feature therefore allows connection to solar panels/PV systems. Additionally, it is suitable for vehicles that need to reduce the current intake.

The Schuko charger is designed for plugging into a 16A Type F, Schuko socket. The 16A setting represents the maximum current an EV should draw from the socket, but this setting should only be used if an electrician certifies that the socket and electrical circuit is capable of withstanding 16A continuous loads.

The lower current settings that are available for this mobile charger will minimise the heat impact on the Schuko socket. This is important when charging your electric vehicle on holiday or in any location where the socket has not been certified for charging an electric vehicle.

Is This Type 2 To Schuko Mobile Charger Suitable For My EV / PHEV?

Choosing The Right Charger

Charging an electric vehicle with a Schuko socket may cause thermal damage if the socket overheats due to damaged or faulty wiring or if the electrical circuit is overloaded. For this reason, an electrician should provide certification for the intended socket to verify that is suitable for EV charging.

We understand that, at times, charging your EV with a socket certified by an electrician may not be feasible. In such instances, we recommend using the lowest ampere setting. It is also a good idea to check that both the plug and socket are not becoming excessively hot during charging.

Avoid using an extension lead or adapter with this 3 pin charger. Plug the charger directly into the socket. Ensure that water does not come into contact with the prongs of the 3-pin plug or enters inside the Type 2 plug. Keep the charger dry when not in use. Before usage, be sure to read the user booklet included with the charger.

To use this 3-pin charger, your EV must have a Type 2 socket. Refer to the photo of a Type 2 socket on this page and match it to your EV.

If you are still not sure, click the button below to find your EV/PHEV. This will enable you to verify if your vehicle is equipped with a Type 2 socket. Additionally, please review the information at the top of this page under “Please Read Before You Buy”. This information will help you to avoid the most common reasons for returning a 3-pin charging cable.

How Waterproof Is This Charger?

This charger consists of four main components: the Schuko plug, the cable, the control box (unit), and the Type 2 plug.

Schuko Plug: The plug should be safe from water if you are plugging it into an indoor socket. If you are using an outdoor socket, the Schuko plug needs to be protected and you should therefore use a weatherproof socket.

Cable: The cable is waterproof as long as there are no cuts or tears in the cable sheath.

Control Box: The standard control box is IP65-rated. This rating means that the control box can withstand light rain. If you are placing the control box outside, you can select the option to upgrade to the IP67-rated control box. This rating means that the control box is fully weatherproof.

Type 2 Plug: The Type 2 plug is built with an outer shell that is designed to withstand rain and snow when connected to the vehicle socket. The vehicle socket is also designed to be watertight and should therefore provide protection from water ingress when the Type 2 plug is connected. A common way for water to enter the Type 2 plug is when the plug cap is replaced after charging. The plug cap must always be replaced after charging your vehicle, but do ensure that the inside of the plug cap is dry. Avoid leaving the plug lying around outside, do not drag or drop the Type 2 plug on the ground and store the charger in a dry place when not in use.
